Secret Garden brought Norway their second Eurovision victory in Dublin with "Nocturne," an enchanting largely instrumental piece featuring Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and Norwegian composer Rolf Løvland.
The unique performance, which included only 24 words of lyrics, marked the first time an instrumental-focused song had won the contest. For Løvland, this was his second Eurovision victory as a composer, having previously won in 1985 with Bobbysocks!
The song won with 148 points and ended Ireland's historic run of three consecutive victories - though fittingly, violinist Fionnuala Sherry was herself Irish.

One of the best Eurovision songs ever! The proof that you can feel the music in different ways!
Nocturne by Secret Garden is accublly the Most Underrated Masterpiece Winning Song in Eurovision
@@neosaintcolumbiamapper I wouldn't say underrated, out of all the RUclips tops for 1995 I haven't seen a single one with Norway out of their top 10
@@danuostret1900 I had them 15th in my top. Though that was made in 2013, not sure if the exact position still stands. Anyhow it is an overrated song.
@@Hartza91 well , that's not surprising coming from someone who has both Norway and Yugoslavia in their top 5 of 1984 ( yes I watched some of your tops )
I heard it for the first time, yes it is a masterpiece. glad I stumbled upon it today. 😊
@@joceery yes , what I love most about it is that it genuinely sounds like piece form the classical era
Here in Brazil, I grew up listening to this song thanks to my father. I never imagined that this poem was from Eurovision until I heard about this event. This song is out of the ordinary. This is music!
*Fun Fact 1:*
At Eurovision 1993, Fionnuala Sherry played violin in the orchestra and Rolf Løvland conducted the Norwegian entry "Alle mine tankar" performed by Silje Vige.
In 1994 they met and formed the duo Secret Garden.
*Fun Fact 2:*
After winning the Norwegian National Final *Melodi Grand Prix 1995* Secret Garden became the representatives of Norway at Eurovision 1995 held in Dublin. "Nocturne" is noted for its almost complete absence of lyrics - with only 24 words being sung in the original Norwegian version and much of the rest of the song being given over to a violin intermezzo. Fionnuala and Rolf were joined on stage by: singer Gunnhild Tvinnereim, Hans Fredrik Jacobsen on penny whistle and Swedish nyckelharpist Åsa Jinder. "Nocturne" also has a version in English.
the English version would have been covered by Celtic Woman as well
Fun fact 3:
Nocturne only just won their Norwegian SF duel with the televote score of 52% (the losing song got 48%).
Fun fact 4:
One of the few times Norwegian entry received 0 points from Sweden (and only 2 points from Denmark).
@@heppoloFun fact 5: in the semies in Norway without hearing the second one I said: we'll be next years host.
When people say they miss live instruments at Eurovision I think they are narrow minded, but then I realise, we’ll probably never experience this level of masterpiece on the Eurovision again. Three minutes of absolute chills.
The violin definitely isn't played live , there's no way we could hear it without the player standing in fron of a microphone, oh and the keyboard isn't even plugged in
@@danuostret1900 the rules were given that the instruments have to play on stage live till the year of 1999.
@@undertakerunicorn2096 1. That still doesn't explain why can we hear the violin without a microphone near it , unless they used boom mics , but we could've seen it in the wide shots , the only explanation I can possibly think of is that the violin wasn't played by the woman on stage but by someone in the orchestra
2. There have been several moments where that rule was broken , for example Germany 1983 was done entirely with backing track and no orchestra , so was Italy 1979 , and arguably the pan flute for Switzerland 1981 wasn't played live , the clearly fake piano solo in Sweden 1986 , the guitarist for Spain 1990 starting to play the instrument a bit late , I don't even know If Iceland 1997 was accompanied by the orchestra , oh and forgot to mention that Celine Dion had a band " playing" the instruments in the back , but they were very well hidden
@@danuostret1900 the violin definitely has a mic. From 0:38 you can see the cable and it's a bit hard to tell but it looks like it's clipped to the tailpiece
@@danuostret1900 you can see the cable at the violin
The most perfect winner of Eurovision ♥
This is for sure one of the best Eurovision songs ever.
My favourite Eurovision song of all time ❤🇳🇴
🇧🇾🇧🇾🇧🇾
The best song that ever competed in Eurovision, and certainly the best winner in history! love it so much
This song is an absolute masterpiece I love it sm
Nocturne was atypical at least: it only had a twenty-four-word chorus, sung once at the beginning and once at the end.
Only 24 words!
One of the best Winner Songs ever ❤😊
Give Norway a Violin and they win
Nice nod to Fairytale
Or Ireland... Violinist is Irish..
@@davemartin8501 Ireland technically won 5 years in a row with this one
MASTERPIECE
When Eurovision was still all about music... TIMELESS BEAUTIFUL!!!
It's so peaceful ❤
It makes me cry like a waterfall 😭😭😭 The visuals and the tunes during the countdown are so attractive wow 😎
For me it’s THE BEST Eurovision song ever! A Masterpiece! ❤️❤️❤️ Well done Rolf & Fionnuala (Secret Garden). I hope to attend a live concert of your wonderful melodic music soon 🙏🏻
I think it's safe to say that a song very much like this would never win Eurovision again, and I'm so happy that it won in '95. One of my favorite winners of all time, it's so atmospheric and beautiful. I just want to live in this song forever.
Oh, I disagree! I think a song like this would blow Salvador's result out of the water.
Salvador's song wouldn't even get this much appreciation in the 50's or 60's , yet he won in 2017 , if He can do that so can Secret Garden
I can't believe you guys have forgotten Jamala won Eurovision. One of the most unique songs to ever enter the contest.
I was so happy and proud when Norway chose this song to represent us in Eurovision. I was convinced of a second win.
I love the quiet feeling during the performance and as you actually almost can hear a safety pin fall to the floor.
30 years later a Norwegian Singer, Emmy, represents Ireland in Eurovision.
Yeah sorry
Simply a masterpiece
By far the best song ever in this competition. Simply magic. I doubt anything will even come close in the near future
,я согласен
We need the all the songs from this year! it's AMAZING! Poland, UK, Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Ireland!
Turkey, Austria too...
The most gorgeous song in all of Eurovision history!
You know your song is legendary when you need few lyrics to win. One of my absolute favorites from the ESC! ❤️❤️❤️
Brilliant. Superb. Out of this world. No.1 ❤️🍀
I can think of Fiounalla Sherry doing the Irish jury points this May while Rolf Lovland doing the Norwegian points in Basel
This legendary song is finally uploaded to the channel…
I got goosebumps... Epic
One of the most beautiful melody my ears have ever been blessed with! Glad this won, eventhough it's not youe typical ESC entry, especially 30 years ago.
this is one of the best winning song in Eurovision history! ✨🇳🇴
I love her music!!! Respect Nocturne
This is the definition of a masterpiece! Norway, please keep sending amazing songs. You are my favorite country at Eurovision!💙
Scandinavian culture is magnificent.🤍🤍
This is the best thing that happened to the Eurovision Song Contest ❤
Nocturne es otra de las canciones que AMABA (amo) sin saber que era una canción eurovisiva y que más adelante yo sería Eurofan 🥰🥰
This is one example of ESC winners usually always bringing something new and exciting: an almost completely instrumental song. I might not think it is one of the best winners but at least it still feels fresh
Still the best eurovision song ever
One of the most magical song from ESC
The legend, beautiful music 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Greetings from Türkiye 🇹🇷

1995, my year of birth and a year where music won 🎉

This is one of the many masterpiece that Eurovision makes each year this is one of my favourite, this would fit perfectly into a fantasy game/movie.❤
Well, it did, didn’t it?
@@Sahi_PKShrek ? Well it's slightly different, only 2 notes are identical to Nocturne
@@danuostret1900 I thought of Shrek indeed, but I was wrong then? 🫢😭

Greatest Eurovision of all time 💖💖💖
Best Eurovision song ever made
My favourite winner ever
I love this song...🥲
What a beautiful song 🥹 I’m crying. This song touch my secret feelings
3:15 Audience at Eurovision looked very different back then compared with now lol
Fact: The keyboard player and one the two members of Secret Garden together with the violinist co-wrote the first ever Eurovision winning song from Norway (La det swinge by Bobbysocks) so technically we can also count him in as a two time winner together with Loreen and Johnny Logan
Still totally awesome! 😁💓😁
My favourite with some words, the music is amazing ❤❤❤❤❤
I know there’s an English version of this legendary masterpiece, but for me, it will always sound better in Norwegian, it just works better with the instruments.
I love this song! Please, The Voice -Ireland winner 1996🇮🇪
A beautiful song!! ❤❤❤
The best of Eurovision
Eurovision with LIVE music. Marvellous, magical masterpiece.
I'm impressed europe voted for an instrumental to win
1:29 I always thought that'd be Secret Garden themselves, but apparently not as I just learned. 😮
Serene and spiritual sounding. Much better than most modern ESC songs.
Absolutely amanzing and beatifull ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this song so much. I've made a video about my mother who passed away more than 5 years ago and I put this song in the video.
I love this song! ❤️
Beautiful piece of music , but my favourite songs in 95 are Sweden , Spain , Israel , Greece , Denmark,Portugal, Turkey .
I love Turkey's as well! I think it's extremely underrated sadly 🥲🥲🥲
I remember during the contest, it was quite early, maybe 5th on, and, after it I said to those watching ' it probably won't win it but there won't be a better tune'. 👌
Simply sublime!
Pure music
Magical ❤🇳🇴
I love it❤❤❤
Ethereal! 🤍
Song written by Rolf Løvland who also wrote "You Raise Me Up".
He also wrote and composed the winning song of ESC 1985, "La det swinge" performed by the pop duo Bobbysocks!
Que maravilla, es una pieza hermosa 🎉❤
