- 6 September 2014, Johannesburg - Former Rwandan army Chief of staff, Kayumba Nyamwasa, spoke to Kwangu Liwewe about what it will take for him to return to Rwanda after numerous attempts on his life, for which he blames President Paul Kagame.
Watching this interview 11years today, his views still remain valid and true! The 'peace' and 'rapid development' in Rwanda is artificial and unreal! Rwandans are not free; they cannot speak their mind. The statement that "Rwandans have still not yet come to terms with their past" is as true today as ever! Paul Kagame has turned Rwanda into a ticking time-bomb! Rwandans deserve better! Africans deserve better!

I entirely agree with Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa on the question of national reconciliation. You can't have Tutsis only running the country's affairs! You must be inclusive and make even those Hutus considered perpetrators of the so called genocide of Tutsis (800,000 to 1,000,000) should be treated as Rwandans not as sentenced to death! By the way, do you believe 1m Tutsis did die in the chaotic civil war in 1994? If you really want to know the facts check this: Hutus are 86% of Rwanda population, Tutsis (within Rwanda and in exile by then) 13% and Batwa accounts for 2%, now by the time of so called genocide Rwanda population was about 8 million! Count yourselves and tell us how many Tutsis died (leave alone Hutus).
Who told you that only Tutsi run the affairs? Our Prime Minister, Edouard Ngirente is a Hutu. I feel weird saying he's a Hutu because we no longer use those terms, but he belonged to Hutu before Rwandans chose to drop those terms that colonialists used to divided us. This Prime Minister who is a Hutu is the one who nominates the cabinet. Here people get jobs because they are qualified, not because of what group they belonged to. You also forget that thousands of Tutsis had been in exile since 1959 when the Hutus started killing them. That's why they formed RPF and attacked in 1990 because the government at the time had denies them the right to return home, saying Rwanda was small and full.

As for us Gen Z, we were raised to be Rwandans. I'm 22 yeses old now and I got a scholarship because of my performance, a job because of how well I answered during the interview and how strong was my resume. I don't know who I am though I know my parents belonged to Hutu during the genocide. Most other youth are like me. But since it has only been 30 years, some people are still not over it. As for Miss Rwanda, she's voted basing on too many facts. Ethnicity is not among them. Army chief might be a friend of president and from the same group, but it's understandable considering they fought both in Museveni's army to liberate Uganda and in RPF to stop the genocide, and that those from other group were the ones committing it and had to flee the country to avoid prison. How, now one has to have high academic performance and physical to join the army. These people are getting old or retiring, it's the youth who join these organs because of their performance rather than who their parents are who will take over. Transformation can't happen overnight, but these terns will soon become just a part of our history.

First and foremost, Rwanda is unique in everything compared to other nations, thus you make wrong assumptions about what future holds for Rwanda, politically.
Rwanda was not created by Kagame and will never end with Kagame.
The only reason led to Rwanda's demise in 1994, was not about the former Rwandan president " Habyar-Imana " staying longer in power. No and no. In Rwandan tradition, a leader can stay in power as long as the people want him to stay on, it is a recorded history in Rwanda. The only problem that led to Rwanda's destruction in 1994 was that the former Rwandan president went along Franco - Belgium political phylosophy of claiming that his opponents, Tutsi in Rwanda, are not Rwandans but foreigners who migrated to Rwanda some thousands of years ago. And all these people you see here claiming to be pro-democracy fighters, are actually Western proxies.
If Kagame were to pass away tonight, there will be his replacement in minutes, not hours. Kagame is not the only one capable of Running Rwanda, but he is the only one we chose for the time being.
We don't believe in Western stupid political phylosophy of rotating leaders who are functioning well, we want change in lives, from worse to better. That's why you see Kagame getting elected over and over again, it is because we are happy with his performance. If he doesn't perform well, we'll vote him out in no time.
Please don't worry about Rwanda's political future, it is well protected more than you can imagine.
